Karnataka Congress legislators against induction of BJP MLAs

Sadananda R in Chamarajanagar.

Some sitting members of the legislative assembly of the Congress in Karnataka have expressed their opposition to the induction of ten suspended Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs to the party.

This opposition is more from those MLAs from whose district their BJP counterparts belong to.

The MLAs have lodged their complaint to the All India Congress Committee general secretary of Karnataka Vyalar Ravi.

Their argument is that the inclusion of the BJP MLAs might dent the secular image of the Congress.

But they also added that they are airing their concern from the party's point of view and if the high command believes that the induction of these MLAs will strengthen the party, they will accept the decision.

Chief Minister S M Krishna and other senior ministers have expressed their support for this induction.

The team of ten BJP MLAs have gone to Delhi along with Karnataka Revenue Minister H C Srikantaiah to formally join the Congress in front of party president Sonia Gandhi.

Meanwhile, Vyalar Ravi has said there is no opposition from the party against inducting the BJP legislators, but some opposition has come from few district committees of the state.

He said that this opposition is due to local political pressures and the state leaders have given their consent to the proposed induction. The state party leaders would address any complaints thereafter, he said.

Three more MLAs from the BJP, who were also expelled from the party, are yet to decide on joining other parties. They said they would wait and watch, before taking a decision.

Thirteen BJP MLAs were suspended from the party after the official candidate for Rajayasabha election was defeated in the election.

The BJP had said all the 13 MLAs had violated the party whip and voted to Vijay Mallya, the liquor baron from the state who eventually won the election.
