MiG crashes in North Bengal, pilots killed

M Chhaya in Kolkata

An Indian Air Force MiG fighter jet crashed over a tea estate in Northern West Bengal on Thursday, killing two pilots, official sources said.

West Bengal Police Inspector General Narayan Chandra Ghosh said the crash occurred near Hafkhawa, 30km from Siliguri town.

The aircraft, carrying a pilot and an instructor, crashed over Bhojnarayan Tea Estate at around 0715 IST.

It is feared that the crash could have caused extensive damage to the tea garden, though there were no reports of any casualty on the ground.

An air force team has rushed to the spot to investigate the crash.
