30 missing fishermen return from Bay of Bengal

Some 30 fishermen, presumed dead in the cyclone this week, returned from the Bay of Bengal, Development Minister Kanti Ganguly said on Saturday.

Three trawlers with about 24 fishermen on board were reported to have returned to Digha in East Midnapore district and another with six fishermen returned to Namkhana in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, Ganguly said.

He said out of the three trawlers that returned to Digha, two reached the shores on Friday night and one early on Saturday morning. However, two other trawlers that left Digha before the cyclone on Monday are still missing.

Asked about the exact number of fishermen missing after the cyclone, the minister said eight fishermen went out to the sea in each trawler at Digha, while at Namkhana the number of fishermen per trawler was about six.

State Fisheries Minister Kiranmoy Nanda on Friday had said that 101 fishermen, who had set sail in 20 trawlers from Digha, Diamond Harbour area in South 24 Parganas and Howrah, were presumed dead as they had not returned even after three days of the cyclone having passed.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had asked the Coast Guard to search the waters near Paradip in Orissa following sighting of empty trawlers there
