BSF, Bangladesh Rifles agree on jetty status quo

M Chhaya in Kolkata

Border authorities of India and Bangladesh on Sunday evening agreed to maintain status quo on the question of construction of a contentious jetty inside India.

Bangladesh Rifles soldiers had fired on a Border Security Force output in Samshernagar area in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district on Friday night to prevent the construction of the jetty on Icchamati river.

The Indian guards had retaliated to the attack in which none was injured. The gun duel had continued for five hours.

A flag meeting between the BSF and BDR officials was held on Sunday where it was decided that status quo would be maintained so far as the construction of the jetty was concerned.

They also agreed to refer the matter to their respective water development agencies for a time-bound solution to the issue.
