Tara Chand likely to be J&K assembly speaker

Congress MLA Tara Chand is likely to become the speaker to the Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly, as no other MLA from any other party has filed nomination papers so far, official sources in Jammu said.

Chand, elected from Chhamb constituency, filed his nomination papers on Wednesday before the secretary to the legislative assembly, M I Ganai, the returning officer for the speaker's post.

Deputy chief minister in the PDP-led coalition government, Mangat Ram Sharma, proposed Chand's name, which was seconded by Muzaffar Hussain Beig, minister for law, parliamentary affairs and finance, sources said.

The newly elected legislators of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly are scheduled to elect the speaker on Thursday after which the Governor Girish Chander Saxena would address the joint session of the assembly and legislative council.
