Tara Chand elected Jammu and Kashmir assembly speaker

The Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly on Thursday unanimously elected senior Congress leader Tara Chand as its new speaker.

Tara Chand's name was proposed by Deputy Chief Minister Mangat Ram Sharma and seconded by Muzaffar Hussain Beig, minister for law, parliamentary affairs and finance, soon after the assembly session began. Chand was elected by a voice vote.

Earlier, on Wednesday, Chand was the only contender to submit his nomination papers before the secretary to the legislative assembly, M I Ganai.
