Militants attack CRPF camp in Srinagar, five soldiers killed

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Two militants on Friday morning attacked a heavily guarded camp of the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force with grenades and assault rifles in Regal Chowk, in the heart of Srinagar.

In the fierce two-hour encounter, five soldiers were killed and ten seriously injured.

The injured soldiers have been rushed to the SMHS hospital.

This is the first fidayeen attack in Srinagar after the new government assumed office in Jammu and Kashmir.

The police sources said the CRPF guards manning the bunker on the main gate shot dead one of the militants, while the other managed to enter the premises.

The authorities then rushed paramilitary Border Security Force reinforcements to the spot and a tight cordon was laid around the camp.

"Soldiers later shot dead the militant who had sneaked inside the premises," a senior police officer told rediff.com.

"The firing was so intense that me and my family came down to the ground floor. We had just finished our pre-dawn meal," a journalist, living in the vicinity, said.
