Renowned Hindi poet Shiv Mangal Singh (87), popularly known as 'Suman', passed away at his residence in Ujjain on Wednesday morning following a heart attack, family sources said.

The poet, who had been ailing for some time, was brought home from hospital recently, they said.

Born in a village in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh in 1915, Suman, who had been honoured with the Padmashri and Padmabhushan, held a number of important posts during his illustrious life.

He was vice-chancellor of the Vikram University from 1968 to 1978, cultural attaché in Nepal in the late fifties and had been honoured with the Soviet Land Award for his work titled Mitti Ki Baraat.

Suman is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.

The funeral will take place on Thursday.
