Ten cricket bookies arrested in Lucknow

Sharat Pradhan in Lucknow

The Lucknow police on Monday arrested ten bookies for accepting bets on the Champions Trophy final between India and Sri Lanka played in Colombo.

While three of them were caught red-handed in Qaiser Bagh area of the city, the leads they provided led to the arrest of the rest.

The police recovered Rs 58,000 in cash in the Qaiser Bagh raid. "This amount would have been much higher had rains not obstructed the play [in Colombo]," Superintendent of Police Rakesh Pandey said.

"While one of the arrested bookies was a partner in a multi-million water park opened recently on the city outskirts, the rest were all flourishing businessmen," he said. "By their own admission they were not new to cricket betting," he added.

The bookies also confessed they were closely linked with betting networks in Mumbai, Kolkata and New Delhi.
