The Hyderabad police have unearthed a Rs 217 million scholarship scandal with the arrest of its kingpin, K V L Jayasimha.
Jayasimha along with U Santosh Kumar, an accused in a similar scam unearthed by the police in June this year, had floated 13 bogus colleges and cheated the government to the tune of Rs 217 million in the name of giving post-matric scholarships to Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe/Backward Class students.
During the course of investigation, the police also found that Jayasimha had presented bogus bills in the name of these fictitious colleges in collusion with the officers of Pay and Accounts Office.
Jayasimha, using the name of an existing educational society, opened 15 bank accounts in three banks -- State Bank of India [Old MLA Quarters branch], Indian Bank [Himayatnagar branch] and Corporation Bank [Hyderguda branch] -- for the 13 bogus colleges.
Jayasimha, in his confessional statement, claimed he got only 25 per cent of the money, while 40 per went to Santosh Kumar and remaining 35 per cent was paid to the officers of Pay and Accounts Office and welfare departments.
With the money, Jayasimha had acquired, among other properties, a palatial four-floor building in Chikkadpally area [worth Rs 25 million] and two apartments in Bangalore.
