Salem faces 6 non-bailable warrants
in Delhi

Gangster Abu Salem, who is in custody in Portugal, figures in 71 cases in different parts of India and six non-bailable warrants are pending against him in Delhi.

The Delhi police registered a case against Salem on August 25, 1998, at Lajpat Nagar when a man allegedly approached controversial politician Romesh Sharma for settling a dispute with his brother.

Sharma sought the help of Salem in the matter, the police claimed.

On November 3, 1998, two more cases were registered against the gangster. Sharma and Salem were charged with conspiring to kill gangster Babloo Srivastava. The second one pertained to making of threatening calls to a businessman.

The fourth case against Salem was registered in May 2002, when the police arrested Mohammed Ashraf alias Babloo, who was asked by the gangster to set up base in New Delhi.

The police procured an NBW against Salem in a case of alleged extortion when three persons -- C P Rai, Ishtiaq and Sadiq -- were arrested.

A Delhi court on October 1 issued an NBW against Salem for allegedly running an organised crime syndicate.

The court also allowed the police to take the help of the Central Bureau of Investigation in getting him extradited from Portugal.
