Situation in Badlapur tense,
but under control

The situation in Badlapur in Maharashtra's Thane district, where police opened fire on Sunday to quell a communal clash, continues to be tense but under control, police sources said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Fatesinh Patil, who rushed to the site after the incident, is still camping at the spot to monitor the situation.

The violence erupted on Sunday evening following a clash between members of two communities. Police fired four rounds to quell the irate mob after two policemen were injured in stone pelting, police sources said.

Violence continued throughout the night and stalls at the railway station were smashed and a timber yard was set on fire by violent groups, the sources said.

Six of the 12 injured are still in hospital, they said.

The reason for the clash, which broke out at 2100 hrs, is still not known.

Additional police forces have been rushed to the spot.

Security has been tightened in nearby sensitive areas like Bhiwandi, Mumbra and Kalyan, the sources said.
