50 arrested in Badlapur:
Kripashankar Singh

At least 50 persons have been arrested as a preventive measure in Badlapur town in Thane district, where riots on Sunday night left 12 people, including four policemen, injured, Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Kripashankar Singh said on Monday.

Singh, who visited the riot-hit town on Monday morning, told PTI that the trouble-affected area was still under curfew, while prohibitory orders have been clamped in other places.

He said two godowns, a rice mill, and two vehicles were burnt by the mob, but denied it was a case of communal violence.

It is believed that the trouble started following an altercation between two youths belonging to different communities.

As the fight escalated, people from both sides are believed to have gathered and resorted to stone pelting leading to injuries to 12 persons, including four cops.

Police then fired four rounds in the air to disperse the clashing groups. The injured were rushed to a hospital at Badlapur. Six of them were later shifted to nearby Ulhasnagar town.

The condition of the injured was improving and they are out of danger, Singh said.

The district collector has been asked to give a detailed report on the matter, he said.

Singh said strict action would be taken against those instigating riots, irrespective of their position in society.

The minister said he has briefed Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and state Congress chief Govindrao Adik about the situation.

The overall situation was under control, he added.
