Cabinet meet on 10th Plan postponed

The Union Cabinet meeting to discuss and approve the Tenth Plan has been postponed as Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Monday cancelled all his engagements citing a bad throat.

Besides the Cabinet meeting in the evening, Vajpayee was to have addressed a function in connection with Valmiki's birth anniversary and inaugurate the Third World Academy of Sciences meet.

A spokesman in the Prime Minister's Office said doctors examined Vajpayee on Monday morning and advised he avoid straining his voice and keep off meetings where he might have to do a lot of talking.

"The prime minister's health is all right. He is clearing files," the spokesman said.

On Sunday, Vajpayee had cancelled a scheduled press conference in Lucknow citing a bad throat and cut short his visit and returned to the capital.

Doctors would again examine Vajpayee to decide whether he can go ahead with his scheduled engagements on Tuesday.

The spokesman also rejected suggestions that the prime minister's abrupt return to Delhi on Sunday may have something to do with his refusal to meet some disgruntled BJP MLAs in Lucknow.
