The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party have decided to jointly contest the next Lok Sabha election, due in October 2004, in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
BJP general secretary Rajnath Singh, a former chief minister of the state, told rediff.com in Mumbai on Sunday that the party's central parliamentary board had agreed to this arrangement.
Asked if this arrangement would apply to other states, Singh said, "I can tell you only about Uttar Pradesh for now."
Singh was in Mumbai to participate in a meeting of the BJP's national council. Among others who attended the meeting were Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani, general secretary Arun Jaitley, party president M Venkaiah Naidu, and vice-president Gopinath Munde.
