One or two BJP legislators can be inducted: Mayawati

Dismissing any threat to her government in the wake of the revolt by Bharatiya Janata Party legislators, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Thursday ruled out any major expansion of her ministry.

"Cabinet expansion has already taken place and there will be no further expansion... Proportionate to the BJP's strength in the government, one or two more ministers can be inducted. Whenever the BJP leaders make the demand, it will be done," she said after a two-hour meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani in New Delhi.

She said senior BJP leader Lalji Tandon and his colleagues had met her to demand "proportionate" representation for their party in the coalition government.

Asked to comment on the demand of some independent legislators that they should be made ministers, she said everyone desired to be in the government.

Mayawati said dissidence in the BJP was an internal matter of the party and the revolt by some of its legislators was not directed against her government.

"There is no threat to my government,"" she said when her attention was drawn towards Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's claim that the Bahujan Samaj Party-BJP ministry had been reduced to a minority. "Rather than making such a claim, Yadav should prove it," she said.
