Indictment in plot to kill Advani deferred

A Mumbai court on Monday deferred the framing of charges against six persons, allegedly members of the Dawood Ibrahim gang, in a case of conspiracy to kill politicians, including Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani.

The case was deferred to September 24 because Sessions Judge D V Marathe is on leave, though defence lawyer Majeed Memon and special public prosecutor Shrikant Bhatt were present in court.

According to the prosecution, the six men conspired to assassinate prominent political figures, including Advani, and strike key installations in Mumbai.

According to the police, two of the gangsters were arrested in 2001 in a theft case and during interrogation revealed their plans to kill prominent politicians and trigger explosions at important public places.

Their disclosure led to the arrest of four others from Chennai and Bangalore, from whom documents were seized, which confirmed their plans, according to the first information report lodged by Police Inspector Shivaji Dhumal on October 9, 2001.

The accused persons are Javed Khan, Akbar Hussain, Srinivas Naidu, Zakir Hussain, Mohammed Saddiq, and Farooq Ghani.
