Kanpur cops train businessmen in self-defence

Sharat Pradhan from Lucknow

Following several incidences of abduction of businessmen in Kanpur for ransom, the Uttar Pradesh police is imparting arms training to the business community for self-defence.

Brainchild of the district police chief R P Singh, the plan took off on Sunday with the first batch of 25 volunteers attending the day-long training camp at the Kanpur police lines.

"This is the first time that such an exercise had been undertaken," Kanpur Deputy Inspector General of Police RR Bhatnagar told rediff.com over telephone.

"With the nature of crime getting more and more complicated, it has become important for the people to extend their cooperation to the police," he said. "We regard this kind of training as a positive step in that direction."

Bhatnagar said, "The recent years has seen an increased demand from industrialists and businessmen for issue of firearm licences. But we discovered that many of them had no knowledge of using these weapons."

"That was what gave birth to this idea to organise special camps to train these people," he said. "The inaugural camp was a big hit and we have already received requests from many more businessmen for such training."

"Depending on the demand, we will continue to hold such camps," he said.

"Once people are equipped to protect themselves, it provides a lot of strength to the crime control machinery as well," he said.
