15 killed in UP bomb blast

Fifteen people were killed and two others injured in a powerful explosion in a tempo laden with material used for manufacturing fire crackers near the Farhat Naga railway crossing on the Kanpur-Hardoi road in Hardoi district of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, police said.

Unofficial sources, however, put the toll at 14.

DIG, Lucknow Range, Arun Kumar, who visited the spot, said the explosion prima facie looked like an accident.

There were 16 passengers in the rickety tempo, a preferred mode of transport for short distances in rural Uttar Pradesh.

"While 14 of these passengers died on the spot, one succumbed to his injuries at the Madhoganj government dispensary," a senior police official said.

Ten of the dead, including the tempo driver, have been identified.

Top police officers of the state have rushed to the spot.
