Pakistani woman's visa extended

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

The Andhra Pradesh high court has ended proceedings on an appeal filed by Tasleem Murad, a Pakistani national married to an Indian, following extension of her visa up to May 29, 2003.

A bench, comprising Chief Justice A R Lakshmanan and Justice V Eswaraiah, heard Tasleem's writ appeal challenging the state government's deportation order.

Tasleem had come to India in March 2001 on a 90-day visa and married her Hyderabadi cousin, Mohammed Jaweed Azmath.

In view of her marriage, her visa was extended till May this year.

Azmath was arrested on September 12 last year in the United States along with another Hyderabadi, following the terrorist attacks in New York on September 11.

No charge of links with terrorists were proved against Azmath and his friend Syed Gul Mohammed Shah, but they were charged and convicted for credit card fraud. They are likely to be deported to India in October.

Meanwhile, Tasleem gave birth to a baby boy. She also filed an application for extension of her visa for two years on grounds of being the wife of an Indian citizen and mother of a kid born in India.

However, when her application was rejected by the central government on security grounds, the state government passed orders for her deportation.

She moved the high court on July 17 challenging the deportation order.

When a single judge dismissed her petition on August 13, she filed an appeal before a division bench, which had passed interim orders staying her deportation for four weeks from August 21. It was when the matter came up before the division bench on Monday that the court was informed about extension of her visa.

"I am extremely happy and very thankful to the authorities. Now, I will be making a fresh application to the government for grant of citizenship to me as I am the wife of an Indian and the mother of an Indian," an elated Tasleem told rediff.com
