Bus catches fire in Andhra; thirteen killed

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Thirteen passengers were charred to death and 18 sustained burns when an Andhra Pradesh Road Transport Corporation bus caught fire in Mahabubnagar district in the early hours of Wednesday.

The driver of the bus had a miraculous escape.

A police spokesman said the bus was on its way from Hyderabad to Rayachoti in Cuddapah district when it caught fire around 0025 IST as it was approaching Kodandapuram village on National Highway 7.

The cause of the fire was not known. Police said one of the passengers might have been carrying inflammable material in a container, which might have caught fire.

Injured passengers were admitted at the government hospital in Kurnool, about 50 km from the accident site.

Senior officials rushed to the spot to supervise relief operations.
