Abu Salem's passport: Postal
department employee held

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

A postal department employee, working in the head post office in Kurnool, has been arrested in connection with the passports issued to underworld don Abu Salem and two women on fictitious names and fake addresses.

Gokari Saheb (43) had handed over the envelopes containing the passports of Salem, Monica Bedi and Sabeena Azmi to a travel agent, Hamid, after learning that the addresses given on the passport applications were not correct.

This was in violation of postal norms, which say that articles sent by Speed Post, like passports, should be hand-delivered to the addressees at their doorstep.

Kurnool Superintendent of Police N Sanjay said that Gokari Saheb had shown undue interest in delivering the passports Hamid. He was arrested on Saturday and questioned about the incident.

Gokari Saheb, a native of Brahmanakotkur in Nandikotkur mandal, had joined the postal department in 1996 and was transferred to the Speed Post wing three years ago.

The police are looking for Hamid, who is believed to have arranged for the passports.

Police teams have been sent to Mumbai in Maharashtra and Bellary, Bangalore and some other places in Karnataka in search of Hameed.

Meanwhile, a Kurnool court rejected the bail applications of Srinivas, a clerk in the special branch of the police, and Mohammed Yasin, a revenue inspector.

On September 23, they had been remanded to 15 days judicial custody along with assistant sub-inspector of police S A Sattar.

The three are believed to have helped Salem secure the passports.
