TDP leader gunned down
in Cuddapah district

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

À ruling Telugu Desam Party leader was on Saturday evening shot dead by suspected members of the outlawed People's War group of Naxalites in Cuddapah district of Andhra Pradesh.

Six persons, dressed as construction workers, had mingled with some labourers engaged in a road-laying project at Balijepalli near Rayachoti town. TDP leader Y Ravindra Reddy (62) was executing the contract.

When work was disrupted due to a machine fault, he visited the spot around 1600 hours to inspect the damage. As soon as he stepped out of his car, two assailants fired three rounds at him from close range with a revolver, a police spokesman said.

Reddy collapsed and died on the spot as a bullet had pierced his head.

In the ensuing confusion, the assailants even tried to snatch the weapon from Reddy's gunman who reacted promptly and opened fire at them.

Reddy, a former chairman of the Rural Electric Cooperative Society at Rayachoti, had been on the hit list of the People's War group for quite some time. After he received some threats, the police had provided him with a gunman.
