Militants attack J&K minister
Baig's ancestral home

April 30, 2003 02:16 IST

Militants on Tuesday night attacked the ancestral home of Jammu and Kashmir Finance Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig at his native village in Baramulla district, reports reaching Srinagar said.

The security personnel present repulsed the attack after an hour-long exchange of fire, the reports said.

Soldiers, who reached the spot, cordoned off the area.

The minister, who also holds the portfolios of law, planning and parliamentary affairs, was in Srinagar when the attack took place.

Further details of the attack and casualties, if any, were not immediately known.

A former vice-president of the People's Conference, a constituent of the Hurriyat Conference, from 1980-84, Baig has been a prime target for militants as he has been on the forefront of discrediting the Hurriyat Conference and militant groups.
