Bedlam over CVC report, LS adjourns for day

August 13, 2003 12:29 IST

The Lok Sabha was on Wednesday adjourned for the day amid pandemonium over the issue of denial of the Central Vigilance Commission's  report on defence purchases to the Public Accounts Committee with angry opposition members demanding Defence Minister George Fernandes's resignation.

Earlier in the day, the House had been adjoured till 1200 IST on the same issue.

As soon as the House reassembled after the one-hour adjournment, members of the Congress, RJD and Left parties again stormed the well, demanding George Fernandes's resignation.

In the midst of din, Speaker Manohar Joshi allowed tabling of some papers, including a statement by Petroleum Minister Ram Naik on Monday's helicopter crash in the Arabian Sea.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 1400 IST over the same issue. As soon as the House met, members mourned martyrs of the Quit India movement, whose anniversary fell on August 9. The House also observed a minute's silence as a mark of respect for the 27 people who died in a helicopter crash in the Arabian Sea on Monday.
