Hua was eased out of power by Deng. He was replaced by Zhao Ziyang as premier in 1980, and by Hu Yaobang as party chairman in 1981. Zhao was removed and placed under house arrest for refusing to order the army to shoot at pro-democracy protesters in Tianamen Square in 1989.
