At least four people were killed and 28 injured in a house collapse triggered by cyclonic rains that lashed several parts of Gujarat on Tuesday.

The four were killed in Golathra village of Kalol tehsil in Gandhinagar district. The majority of the injured were from Golathra, while a few were from Amjha village of the same district, fire brigade sources said.

Some of the injured, who sustained serious head wounds, are being shifted to the Ahmedabad civil hospital, while others have been admitted to the Gandhinagar civil hospital.

The unexpected rains, accompanied by high-velocity winds, threw normal life out of gear in the affected parts.

Gujarat government spokesman and Health Minister I K Jadeja said the district administrations of the affected areas have swung into action and immediate rescue and relief measures, including deployment of a team of doctors, have been initiated.

In Ahmedabad, a house collapsed and trees were uprooted at several places even as people waded through water-logged areas to reach their destinations, fire brigade sources added.

The spell of unexpected rains have caused extensive damage to the standing crop of jeera (cumin) and potatoes in north Gujarat, Banaskantha district collector Kamal Dayani said.
