Ghatkopar blast accused allege threats by jailor

February 24, 2003 20:12 IST

The judicial probe into the alleged escape of a Ghatkopar bomb blast accused on Monday took a new turn with two co-accused alleging threats from the jailor to eliminate them by raising a false alarm.

Dr Matin Abdul Basit and Zahir Ahmed sent a communication to a POTA court to this effect through another accused Imran Mehndi, facing charges of weapon seizure and firing on policemen.

Imran informed the designated Judge A P Bhangale that Matin and Zahir had asked him to convey to the court about the jailor's threat. The court then recorded his statement.

The judge has summoned the two on Tuesday to hear their complaint. He has also asked public prosecutor Rohini Salian to call for a report from the jailor of the central prison where the accused are lodged.

In a related development, defence lawyer Majeed Memon opened arguments in the judicial probe into the alleged escape of accused Khwaja Yunus Sayeed. He said that it was improbable that the under trial had escaped from the jeep in which he was being taken to Aurangabad on January 7.

According to the police, Khwaja Yunus Sayeed escaped when the jeep met with an accident. Co-accused Matin Abdul Basit and Zahir Ahmed told the court that the police had beaten Sayeed  so badly that he vomited blood and a doctor had to be called. They said he could not have escaped with such injuries.
