Mob pelts stones at Railway
Minister Nitish Kumar

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna | January 24, 2003 04:23 IST

An irate mob pelted stones on the Union Railway Minister Nitish Kumar and Congress Minister of Parliament Rajo Singh during a function to inaugurate a railway line in Sheikhpura district in Bihar.

According to district officials ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal supporters pelted stones the moment Nitish Kumar and Rajo Singh arrived to speak.

"Both Nitish Kumar and Singh escaped unhurt but several people were injured in the incident" a police official said.

The angry RJD supporters were protesting against the killing of nine party workers in December 26 in 2000, allegedly at the behest of Rajo Singh. Singh is a Begusarai MP, who used to rule the roost till killing took place.

Sheikhpura Superintendent of Police Shoib Khan told rediff.com that situation is tense, but under control.

RJD supporters did not allowed Rajo Singh to speak in meeting and shouted slogans against him and disturbed Nitish Kumar too when he mentioned Singh during his speech.

No arrest has been made so far in this connection.

Singh was released on bail June 2002 by the Patna high court in a case connected with the killing of nine RJD members in Sheikhpura in December 2001. RJD's Sheikhpura district chief was among those killed

Singh was lodged in the jail after he surrendered before the judicial magistrate of Sheikhpura on May 11, 2002 after absconding for at least four and a half months.

Singh's son Sanjay, a former minister in the government of Chief Minister Rabri Devi, and several others are in judicial custody in connection with the case.
