Ellora, 30 kilometres west of Aurangabad, Maharashtra, is home to Hindu and Buddhist cave temples. The Kailasa Temple, a Hindu shrine dedicated to Shiva, was built in the eighth century by King Krishna I of the Rashtrakuta dynasty. Carved from an entire basaltic rock face, this awe-inspiring structure is 45 metres high and 85 metres deep.

Kailasa, or Kailash, is the holy mountain in the Himalayas that Hindus regard as the abode of Lord Shiva. This temple in its entirety is an architectural analogy of the sacred peak.
