Security tightened at Mumbai's diamond hub
September 04, 2003 15:26 IST
In the wake of last month's twin bomb blasts in Mumbai, security has been tightened at the city's diamond trade hub -- the 25-storied Pancharatna building in Zaveri Bazaar.
With the reported involvement of the Gujarat Muslim Revenge Force in August 25's twin blasts -- one at Zaveri Bazaar and the other at the Gateway of India -- the Mumbai police is now paying special attention to places where the Gujarati community has substantial presence.
The police recently convened a meeting of diamond traders to brief them about the new security arrangements in the Pancharatna building. Around 300 traders attended the meeting.
People who have offices in the building and own cars have been issued passes. No-parking zones have also been demarcated in and around the building from the point of view of safety.
Hawkers have been cleared from around the building and vigil for suspicious persons has been increased.
