EC to move apex court on RS election

The Election Commission on Saturday asked its state officers not to accept nomination forms for Rajya Sabha elections, but decided to move the Supreme Court seeking vacation of its order staying the poll process for 65 seats of the House of elders.

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the June 21 Rajya Sabha biennial elections and made EC a party to a petition challenging the new open balloting system and the decision to do away with the domicile requirements.

Several political bigwigs, including Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Power Minister P M Sayeed, are seeking election to the Upper House of Parliament.

Prominent among he retiring members are Jaswant Singh, Pramod Mahajan, Arun Shourie, S P Gautam, O Rajagopal, BSP leader Kanshi Ram, S R Bommai and Swaraj Kaushal.
