Mumbai received heavy rainfall since Sunday and more heavy rains are predicted till Tuesday. Several areas in Mumbai have been flooded and train services are erratic.

Rain-battered Mumbai is set to witness another round of disruption in normal life with the Meteorological department predicting heavy to very heavy rains till Tuesday morning.

"There would be heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours (8 am Monday to 8 am Tuesday) accompanied by strong gusty winds. Fishermen have been given a warning not to venture into the sea as it would be rough to very rough," Met office Director Thakur Prasad said.

"However, after the adverse weather condition till 8 am on Tuesday, the rainfall is likely to reduce," he said.

Northern parts of Mumbai and neighbouring areas of Thane district will receive very heavy rainfall throughout, but the southern parts are expected to get some relief after 12 hours (8 pm on Monday night), Prasad said.

Meanwhile, rainfall measured till 5.30 am on Monday was 100 mm in Colaba and 149.6 mm in Santa Cruz, he added.

Hundreds of houses in the suburban areas including Andheri, Santa Cruz, Bandra, Marol, Saki Naka, Wadala, Kurla, Chuna Bhatti and Chembur and the Thane city are under waist-deep water, according to the police.

Several low-lying areas in Sion, Kurla, King's Circle, Chembur, Wadala, Shivdi, Santa Cruz, Kalina, Andheri and Bandra are facing water logging affecting the road traffic.

Visibility at Mumbai airport has been fluctuating since morning. Jet Airways [Get Quote] has curtailed 30% of its flights. It has cancelled 34 of its scheduled 144 flights on Monday. Air Sahara has cancelled its flights.

All the educational institutions in the city and Thane are closed, but the offices are to remain open even as office-goers were struggling to reach their respective destinations by whatever means available.

Jam-packed trains on suburban central and western lines are running late and at longer intervals, railway sources said adding, on central line -- both Harbour and main lines -- have been severely affected.

On Harbour line, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus-Panvel service has been disrupted since 8 am due to waterlogging in Chuna Bhatti in central Mumbai, however, shuttle services are operational from Kurla to Panvel, they said.

On Central main line, the trains are running upto Thane on slow tracks and upto Kalyan on the fast tracks.

The long distance trains on the Central Railway would ply only after August 6 owing to the widespread damage caused to the tracks, railway sources added.
