On July 26, 2005, the highest-ever rainfall recorded in a single day in India hit Mumbai, the financial capital of the country, crippling communication and power lines.

Thousands were stranded and forced to sleep in offices or wade for miles through flooded streets. Airports shut down, train services were disrupted and highways were choked with cars.

Across the state of Maharashtra, about 900 people were killed and more than 90,000 people had to be evacuated to safety. The death toll is still rising, as disease has taken over where the water left.
