With Saturday's massive earthquake causing widespread devastation in Jammu and Kashmir [Images], the Union Health Ministry has constituted a 30-member rapid response team of medical practitioners who are ready to move to affected areas at short notice.

The team consists of physicians, surgeons, anesthetists and orthopedic surgeons drawn from Delhi's Safdarjung, Ram Manohar Lohia and Lady Harding Medical College hospitals, the Health Ministry said in a statement in New Delhi.

Besides, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences has also been kept on alert.

Essential medicines, intra-venous fluids, antibiotics, syringes and dressing material are being mobilised to be flown to Srinagar [Images] at short notice, the statement said.

Officials of the Union Health Ministry are in constant touch with Jammu and Kashmir authorities to assess the situation and provide necessary assistance.

35 security personnel killed in J&K quake

A round-the-clock control room has been put in operation in the Directorate General of Health Services to monitor and coordinate medical relief activities, the statement said.

It said the Director of Health Services of Kashmir Division had informed that there is adequate stock of drugs in the state and medical teams have been rushed to Kupwara and Baramullah districts with essential medicines.
