Power supply in entire western Maharashtra, parts of the Marathwada region and suburbs of Mumbai were severely affected on Wednesday due to a fault in the western grid.

The domestic and the international airports also faced a power failure for half-an-hour but operations were restored with the help of their own generator sets, sources said.

"The fault occurred at around 9.55 AM in the western grid and has not yet been located as yet," MSEB sources said.

The power situation is expected to be normal within one-and-a-half hours, they said.

Western suburbs, including Andheri where Reliance Energy Ltd [Get Quote] supplies power and other suburbs and neighbouring Thane, Navi Mumbai and Panvel where MSEB supplies power have also been affected.

A press release from Reliance Energy Limited said:

"Owing to a major disturbance in the Western Grid, power supply to consumers in parts of Maharashtra including parts of Mumbai has been affected. REL expects supply in its area to be normalised by 1300 hours"
