Fifteen people were killed, including four women, and 25 injured when the bus in which they were travelling fell into a gorge near Tallital in Nainital district of Uttaranchal on Thursday morning.

The Uttar Pradesh Roadways bus, on way to Nainital from New Delhi, fell into the ravine at Gethia in the district when its driver lost control of the vehicle.

While 12 people were killed on the spot, three died in hospital. The injured persons, including the driver, were being treated in different hospitals in nearby Haldwani town. The condition of the bus driver and some others is critical, Sharma told PTI from the accident spot.

The mishap took place after the driver of the bus, carrying 40 passengers -- mainly from Almora, felt sleepy due to overnight fatigue and lost control of the vehicle, Sharma added.
