The mortal remains of slain Indian engineer Kasula Suryanarayana were consigned to the flames at Patelnagar samshanghat (cremation grounds) in Malkajgiri town on the outskirts of Hyderabad on Tuesday morning.

The funeral pyre was lit by his five-year-old son Satya [Images] Teja and father K Chandrasekhar, even as his family members wept inconsolably.

Besides his two daughters Anisha and Manisha and other relatives, his 'second' wife Swapna and her eight-month-old daughter Nitisha attended the last rites.

A large crowd, consisting of neighbours, relatives as well as people from all walks of life, accompanied the cortege from his house in east Anandbagh colony to the cremation grounds.

The Malkajgiri municipal commissioner laid a wreath on the body on behalf of the government.

Earlier, as soon as the coffin was taken out from the house, his second wife squatted on the road and blocked the way, demanding that she be allowed to have a glimpse of the body.

The police forcibly removed her from the scene and the funeral procession went ahead.

Subsequently, the family relented and allowed her to come to the cremation grounds.

Meanwhile, the slain engineer's first wife Manjula, who was hospitalised following a suicide attempt on Monday night, is recovering.

She was first shifted to the nearby ADR Hospital in Malkajgiri. Subsequently, she was admitted to Poulomi hospital at Sainikpuri where she was given a stomach wash.

Again, she was shifted to the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology at Somajiguda as she had a gastric problem.

The doctors said her condition was stable.
