Congress candidate Jehangir Mir was on Saturday elected from the Poonch-Haveli Assembly constituency in Jammu and Kashmir [Images].

He defeated his nearest rival Yashpal Sharma (Independent) by 4,398 votes. Mir had polled 20,697 votes, while Sharma bagged 16,299 votes.

National Conference candidate Eijaz Ahmed had polled 16,227 votes, while BJP's Pardeep Sharma got 1,957 votes. The border constituency went to polls on December 12.

The by-election was necessitated due to the death of NC's G M Jan, who won the seat in the two previous assembly elections. Jan died a few months ago after prolonged illness.

The election authorities had set up 135 polling stations. The Election Commission had deputed two observers for the polling in the constituency where eight candidates were in the fray.
