A cadet of the Indian Military Academy was killed and an instructor seriously injured in an accidental grenade explosion during training in the academy premises in Dehradun, Uttaranchal, on Friday.

The grenade exploded when cadet 22-year-old Bir Kumar Tiwari, who hails from Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, was about to throw it during the training session, IMA spokesman Col A K Chauhan said.

"This is a training accident," Col Chauhan said.

The spokesman said instructor Hawaldar Vijay Kumar, who was standing next to the cadet, was also injured in the explosion.

Tiwari, who sustained shrapnel wounds, was taken to the military hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The condition of the instructor was stated to be serious. An inquiry has been ordered into the grenade explosion.
