Like all major writers, Marquez has had much to say beyond the realm of literature. His old friendship with Cuban leader Fidel Castro has led to much criticism, and there have been past accusations of his support for guerrilla groups operating in Colombia. In January, 2006, he joined a number of internationally renowned figures in demanding sovereignty for Puerto Rico.
There is still much proof that his star continues to shine bright though. The British director Mike Newell -- who gave us Four Weddings and a Funeral -- has begun a production of Love in the Time of Cholera, its screenplay written by Marquez himself.
Interestingly, in 2000, a newspaper in Peru incorrectly reported the writer's death from lymphatic cancer (he was diagnosed with the disease a year before). A supposed 'farewell poem' was published by newspapers the following day, and soon determined to be a hoax.
Marquez is alive, and well, and still writing. For that, all who love great literature give thanks.
