A suspected Liberation Tiger of Tamil Eelam-trained militant, wanted in connection with an attack bid on Fort St George in Chennai in 1990, has been arrested, police said in Madurai on Wednesday.

Raja Ayyappan, a member of the 'Tamizhar Pasarai' outfit, was arrested by Q-Branch police on Monday at Thanjavur, about 165 km from Madurai, following a tip off, they said.

Ayyappan had arrived in Thanjavur for attending a relative's wedding, they said. The accused was remanded to judicial custody on Tuesday.

Ayyappan went underground in 1990 after the unsuccessful attack attempt at Fort St George, which houses the state secretariat and the legislative assembly.

He was also accused of robbing Rs 50,000 from a teacher at Mannargudi and was named in several criminal cases in Srirangam, police said.

Ayyappan has allegedly received training at an LTTE camp between 1990 and 1998, they said.
