A top Lashker-e-Toiba militant involved in last year's serial blasts in Uttar Pradesh was killed along with another ultra of the outfit in an encounter with police in Pulwama district on Friday, a senior police official said.
The self-styled district commander of LeT, Abdul Rahman of Pakistan alias Rehman Bhai and a local militant Moin Ahmed Mir, were killed in the gunfight with Jammu and Kashmir [Images] police personnel at Nikloora-Aglar village, Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police Kuldeep Khoda told visiting reporters in Pulwama.
Khoda said Rahman was involved in the serial blasts in UP in November last year.
Acting on a tip off about the presence of militants in the village, the police launched a search operation. During the search, militants opened fire at the police, leading to an encounter between the two sides in which the two ultras were killed.
Khoda said Rehman was a dreaded militant from the LeT. Both the militants were involved in the attack on a road opening party of the Central Reserve Police Force on February 20 last year in which two CRPF personnel were killed.
They were also involved in the attack on officials of the Indian Railway Corporation, in which one security personnel was killed.
The DGP said investigations revealed that Rehman was closely associated with LeT cadres outside the state also.
Rahman and his associate Abu Atif were reportedly instrumental in supplying arms and ammunitions to the militants in UP, Khoda said.
