India on Tuesday said it was for peace and stability in the region and hoped that democratic institutions and processes had consolidated in Pakistan.

"Pakistan is our neighbour. We want peace and stability in the region. India shares a special relationship with Pakistan," Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma said when asked to react to the results of Pakistani polls where PPP and PML-N have emerged as the largest parties.

"Both the countries can share the benefits of economic growth," he said on the sidelines of an interactive session organised by the Bharat Chamber of Commerce.

On the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal, Sharma said it was extremely important for the nation to sign the deal.

"If the deal is not signed, then it would definitely hurt India's interests of long-term energy security," he said
