Gawli remanded to police custody

Gangster and Akhil Bharatiya Sena chief Arun Gawli was on Thursday remanded to police custody up to September 4.

The order was passed by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sharad N Chimade following the police's plea that they had evidence against the gangster in the Natwarlal Desai murder case.

Quoting a blood-stained dairy recovered from the slain builder, the investigating officer said Gawli, who was arrested on Wednesday, had a meeting or talk with Desai on June 23.

Meanwhile, two sharp-shooter of the Gawli gang were killed in different police encounters in the city.

Dreaded gangster Ganesh Bhosle alias Vakil was killed in an encounter at Trombay in north-east Bombay on Thursday evening.

An ''injured'' Bhosle was rushed to a nearby hospital after the encounter, where he was declared dead before admission.

In another encounter, Jeetu Mane was shot dead on Wednesday night by the police at Govandi, north-east Bombay.

Following a tip-off that Mane and one of his associates would visit builder Bharat Singh to collect money, the police laid a trap.

Spotting the gangster at Govandi station, the police party asked him to surrender. Mane fired at the police and in the encounter that followed he was shot dead by the police.

A constable was also injured. The gangster's associate managed to flee.

Mane was taken to the Rajawadi hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The constable is undergoing treatment at the same hospital.
