148-year-old man dies in Maharashtra

A 148-year-old seer, Ganeshbaba Maharaj, died in Nashik on Friday.

Thousands of his followers from the city as well as all parts of the state have started pouring in to pay their last respects to the departed soul.

Ganeshbaba was born in 1849 at Ganagapur on the day of Datta Jayanti. In 1869, he completed his MA from Bombay's Wilson College. In 1870, he was a professor of Sanskrit and French in Ferguesson College of Pune.

Later, he took up religious work by establishing maths (religious centres) in various states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

He was also associated with Lokmanya Tilak, Gopalkrishna Gokhale, Shirdi Saibaba and Gadgebaba.

In 1975, he came to Nashik Road and built a Ganesh mandir near Bitco college.
