Supreme Court asks UP to find Chishti tomb's golden urn

If the Uttar Pradesh government does not find the Hazarat Sheikh Saleem Chishti dargah (tomb)'s golden kalash (urn) within four weeks, the matter will be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The Supreme Court passed an order to this effect on Thursday.

A division bench comprising Justices S B Majumudar and S Shaghir Ahmad observed that the state government had made little headway in recovering the vessel or nabbing the culprits since it was stolen on July 4.

The incident was brought to the court's notice by a telegram. Turning the message into a petition, the court issued notices to the Centre, the state government and the Archaeology Survey of India. All the respondents were asked to file affidavits within four weeks.

The court said the respondents failed to do this.

The tomb at Fatehpur Sikri was built by Emperor Akbar in the 15th century.
