Govt-Shia leader agreement ends Lucknow violence

The controversy over the Azadaari procession, which triggered violence in Lucknow, was resolved on Tuesday with the administration and Shia religious leader Maulana Kalbe Jawwad reaching an agreement.

According to an official spokesman, the main point of the agreement was the immediate release of Maulana Kalbe Jawwad, who had been detained at the Lalitpur jail under the National Security Act. As many as 840 others, jailed in connection with various incidents over the last 12 days, would also be released.

The ban on the Azadaari processions by Shia Muslims had led to incidents of violence, arson and clamping of curfew in the old city.

Reports say that the Shia leader has already been released from jail and was being brought to Lucknow.
