Hindu activists restrained from entering Kashi temple

The police detained nearly 200 activists of various militant Hindu organisations, even as devotees offered puja and jalabhishek in the famous Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi on July 21, the first Monday of the month of Shravan.

Though no major Hindu organisation had called for offering jalabhishek at Shrinagar Gauri in the 'temple-mosque' complex, Senior Superintendent of Police L P Mishra said many activists tried to reach there in groups. They were detained as a preventive step.

The detenues include Shiv Sena activists as well as some belonging to the Hindu Tigers.

Meanwhile, thousands of kanwarias carrying holy water and chanting religious slogans visited the temple.
