Four soldiers killed in Nagaland ambushes

At least four soldiers were killed and 13 were injured in two separate ambushes in Nagaland since Wednesday night.

Two soldiers were killed and five were hurt when suspected underground activists ambushed their vehicle at Piphema, about 35 kms from Kohima on Thursday morning.

Sources said three vehicles were on patrol duty at Piphema on the Kohima-Dimapur road on National Highway 39 when they were ambushed by suspected militants at 11.30 am. Two soldiers of the Assam Rifles were killed and five others injured.

In another attack, two soldiers were killed and eight were injured when suspected militants ambushed their vehicle at Dimapur on Wednesday night.

Reinforcements were rushed to the area and a joint combing operation of army, security forces and police personnel was launched.

This is the first attack on security personnel after a ceasefire was declared, starting Friday, between the Centre and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isaac-Muivah).
